Restoration
Many instruments have been altered by wear and by repairs performed from time to time. Restoration is the process of bringing an instrument back to its original state as much as is practical. It is a conservative and painstaking approach to each instrument, saving as much of the original instrument as possible. Each project is uniquely tailored to the instrument.
Repair
For instruments that have suffered damage, I offer a full range of professional options to satisfy any repair needs. Services include crack repair, neck resets, replacement of missing wood, patches, pegbox and scroll repairs, varnish retouching, and many others.
Setup
To optimize an instrument’s tonal characteristics and ease of playing, I offer setup work at the highest level. A proper setup can make all the difference between an unplayable instrument and a rewarding one. Setup services include cutting a new bridge, new soundpost, planing or replacing the fingerboard, reshaping the neck, and fitting pegs. By carefully considering each instrument’s construction and using the best materials, it is possible to arrive at the ideal setup for each individual instrument.
Adjustment
Because violin family instruments are made with materials that are sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, they can occasionally lose their responsiveness or simply stop performing as usual. So long as they are in good condition and are set up properly, it is often possible to bring back or improve their sound and character through adjustment. By listening closely to playing and discussing the needs of the player, I can identify what is needed and make methodical adjustments to arrive at the desired sound. Adjustments are commonly made to sound post position, bridge placement, and string afterlength
Bows
I offer bow rehairs of all violin family instruments, using the finest hair available. Any bows that come into the shop are carefully examined for any structural issues, then cleaned and polished before rehairing. I also offer several bow repair services, such as new tips, windings, leather thumb grips, eyelet replacement, and minor repairs. For any customers seeking more serious repairs or restoration work, I will be happy to recommend bow specialists who are perfectly suited for the task.
